Mission: Inform Ohioans of effective steps to secure a thorough and efficient system of common schools throughout the State.
STEPS, Supporters of Thorough and Efficient Public Schools, formed from a parent's group concerned with the quality of public education in Beavercreek, Ohio. As we networked with other concerned parents throughout the state and the nation, it became obvious that we faced many of the same hurdles.
Taking the advice of a Boulder, Coloardo parent, we extended our scope statewide, with the focal point of influencing the State Assembly to take the necessary steps to "secure a thorough and efficient system of common schools throughout the State," as mandated by the Ohio Constitution.
In working with state legislators, we discovered that they were not receiving input from their constituents regarding the components Ohioans felt to be a part of a thorough and efficient system. One legislator even noted that a public school superintendent from his district declined share his vision of a thorough and efficient system.
As supporters of public schools in a democracy, we felt compelled to spread the word to our fellow Ohioans that a great opportunity existed to chart the path of public schools in the next century, and ensure that all public school students in Ohio benefit from a thorough and efficient system of common schools throughout the State. This will require communicating a shared vision of the purpose of publlic education, and fostering commitment to achieving that vision.
